sample. NCSS statistical software (www.ncss.com) was used for the analyses. Po.05 was taken as statistically significant. In 2003, the average age ! standard deviation was 75 ! 4 in both groups (P5.30). In 1974, men in the high-risk group had significantly higher body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides than the low-risk group. Except for the more-frequent history of diabetes mellitus in the high-risk group (P5.04), there were no significant differences in the history of diseases after 1974 between the groups. The mean summary z-scores of the neuropsychological assessment in 2003 are shown in the Figure 1. The cross-sectional study of Vogels et al. showed that neuropsychological status in general was best in healthy controls, worse in cardiac patients, and worst in patients with CHF. The longitudinal Helsinki Businessmen Study gives perspective to this result by showing that higher cardiovascular risk factor status in healthy middle-aged men predicted worse cognitive function 29 years later, in old age. This result in a socioeconomically homogenous cohort is in accordance with other studies showing long-term adverse effects of vascular risk factors on the development of dementia. The prevention of cognitive decline should thus be started early.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas
Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...
متن کاملResting-state Functional Connectivity During Controlled Respiratory Cycles Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Introduction: This study aimed to assess the effect of controlled mouth breathing during the resting state using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods: Eleven subjects participated in this experiment in which the controlled “Nose” and “Mouth” breathings of 6 s respiratory cycle were performed with a visual cue at 3T MRI. Voxel-wise seed-to-voxel maps and whole-brain region of i...

متن کاملRepeatability of Detecting Visual Cortex Activity in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Introduction As functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is too expensive and time consuming, its frequent implementation is difficult. The aim of this study is to evaluate repeatability of detecting visual cortex activity in fMRI. Materials and Methods In this study, 15 normal volunteers (10 female, 5 male; Mean age±SD: 24.7±3.8 years) attended. Functional magnetic resonance images were ob...
متن کاملAnalysis of Memory-Related Brain Activation Maps in Sleep-Depriveation using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Background and purpose: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder with negative consequences such as decreased quality of life. In this study, the effect of sleep deprivation on memory in both young and older adults was investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, fMRI data of 40 healthy subjects (17 young and 23 older people) w...
